HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SITES IN SKOPJE

Fortress of Skopje - Kale
This fortress has the dominant place in the city. It was built of stone blocks from the ruins of the city of Skupi, during the rule of the Romans, Czar Justinijan the Fist. Today in the space of the fortress is an arranged park, which serves for recreation. The visitors have a wonderful view on the city and the river Vardar from there.

The Stone Bridge
According to certain data the bridge was built in the 6th century, whereas in its present form it was raised upon the old foundation in the time of Sultan Murat the second in the first half of the 15th century. The Stone Bridge is one of the "trade marks" of Skopje. It links the old town on the eastern side of the river with the more modern part of Skopje on the western side.

Daut-Pashin amam
It’s an Islamic profane architecture built by the grand vizier Daut Pasha in the 15th century. In the first time it was used for the needs of its harem and later it served as a public bath. Today, the Turkish bath is turned into a National Art Gallery. It is located in the vicinity of the Old Bazaar.

Kursumli An
The Inn was used as caravanserai from the time of its construction (XVI century) until 1878, when it was converted into notorious prison. Today Kurshumli An is converted into Lapidarium (a collection of stone monuments) of the Museum of Archeology. It’s located near the old Bazaar.

Mustafa-Pasha mosque
This mosque was build by Mustafa Pasha in XVI century. It’s a monument of the Islamic culture attracts the attention with its size and beauty. It is located in the vicinity of Kurshumli An, in the old part of the city.

Old Skopje bazaar
On the left side of the river Vardar, in the ancient part of Skopje is the old Skopje bazaar. Up to the present time the bazaar has experienced several changes in respect of the appearance and the organization, but it has still kept the spirit of the past with the small innumerable handicraft shops, coffee and tea rooms.

Monastery St. Panteleimon
The monastery is located 8 km south-west from Skopje, in the village of Upper Nerezi, on the mountain Vodno. The monastery church devoted to St. Panteleimon was built in 1164. On the walls of this church a unique gallery of the master pieces of the Bysantium art is presented. In the vicinity of the church there is a restaurant and the best view of the city

Monastery of St. Andrew
It’s sited 18 km southwest of Skopje in the picturesque landscape of the Treska river, on the bank of accumulative lake Matka. According to the preserved Slavic inscriptions the church was built in 1398 by Andrea, the second son of King Vukasin.

The church St. Spas
 It was built in the beginning of the XVII or XVIII century, upon foundations on an older church. In contrast to the modest outside appearance of the church, after one enters inside, he immediately becomes astonished in front of the beauty of the wooden carved iconostasis on the eastern side. The Church of St. Spas, situated in Skopje’s Old Town.

Museum of the City of Skopje
This used to be Skopje’s Railway Station. After the earthquake it was converted into Museum of Skopje. The clock in the preserved ruins of the old railway station remained frozen at 5:17 am, the moment that the predawn earthquake turned Skopje into landfill.

Museum of Contemporary Art
It was founded in 1964. The idea behind its formation was the fact that a multitude of artists from all over the world started donating their art works immediately after the disastrous earthquake in Skopje. This museum ranks among the top museums not only in Skopje and Macedonia, but in this part of Europe as well.

Museum of Macedonia
The Archaeological Museum displays a permanent exhibition featuring the material culture of Macedonia dating back to the pre-historic era. The valuable exhibits take the visitor on a journey through the millenniums, through the Neolithic Age, the Bronze and the Iron Ages, the Classical and the Hellenistic Periods, as well as the Romaoian-Slavonic Epoch.

Suli An / The Old Bazaar Museum
Suli An, Old bazaar is a impressive structure from 15th century, currently functioning as the Faculty of Fine Arts.
