CrossSections Project

International project |  CrossSections  | Curated by: Basak Senova | 2017-2020

The CrossSections project is a cross disciplinary research platform focusing on artistic research, dialogues and production. The project reflects on "process" in the form of an open format with the aim to articulate critical reactions to the political, economic, and social disturbances facing us today. The project emerged from the need to challenge the‘status quo’ across the political spectrum and support effective and critical forms of discursive and artistic productions to emerge.

The CrossSections project aims at discussing and sharing diverse realities, conditions, and strategies in different geographies. By placing the artistic production of 19 artists as the centre of its research and plot, it will be shaped by the cumulative interdisciplinary input and data through meetings, residencies, performative presentations, and publications in the course of a year. Its research process involves different focus groups, institutions and educational bodies engaging with the re-positioning of the perspectives by giving priority to the production.

The CrossSections project has the duration of three years that takes place from 2017 to 2020. The project has three phases: the first preliminary phase was to structure the project by gathering artists and institutions along with founding sources; the second phase has been dedicated to the meetings and residencies, while the third phase is based on productions and exhibitions. It envisions four types of complementary meetings, taken place in different cities of Europe: CORE Meetings are designed to last for 48 hours with the participation of the artists and the curator; SHARE Meetings are for discussions with the organizers, the curator and the other actors (artists, curators, academicians, and cultural workers); PERIPHERAL Meetings include different focus groups along with academicians; PUBLIC Meetings give information about the project by sharing and discussing the developments of the project with public. A website with edited content accompanies and documents the project.

The final exhibitions will take place at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, WUK (Werkstätten und Kulturhaus) in Vienna, then it will travel to Helsinki and Stockholm accompanied by a series of talks. The project will be concluded with a book. Residencies, exhibitions, and book launches takes place in Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Vienna.
